AI Adoption

AI for growing businesses: where to start on a budget

Artificial intelligence is no longer limited to large companies with dedicated AI teams and expensive technology budgets. Small and growing businesses can start with one workflow and prove it before spending anything significant.

Artificial intelligence is no longer limited to large companies with dedicated AI teams and expensive technology budgets. Small and growing businesses can start with one workflow and prove it before spending anything significant.

Start where the friction is

Pick the task people do most often and complain about most: answering the same customer question, summarizing a call, or re-keying data between two systems. That is where the time goes, and it is where a small automation pays for itself fastest.

The test is whether the task is repeated, whether the input is already digital, and whether you would recognise a good answer. If all three are true, it is a candidate. If the work needs judgement about people rather than patterns, leave it alone for now.

Keep the human in the loop

A first project should draft, not decide. Have the model do the reading and the first pass, and keep a person on the approval. That is cheap to build, cheap to run, and it is the difference between a tool people trust and one they quietly stop using.

What it costs

For most first projects the bill is the model usage and a few hours of integration. The expensive part is not the tool, it is the data you have to connect to it, and that work is worth doing once. Teams that treat the data work as a product rather than a cost of the AI project get more out of every subsequent model they add.
